Compassion

9/30/09
Don't have my usual thought out specific thing I wanted to say, but I do feel a need to blog since I listened to the Dalai Lama in person today.

The presence this man gives is rather impressive. Despite his frail appearance, the hunched back, the wrinkles, the massive glasses, he doesn't fail to command the attention of the audience.

.. sort of. I kind of dozed off during a bit of it. I blame: lack of lighting, lack of sleep, pseudo-comprehensible English.

Although not over yet, the Dalai Lama's speech at the NOW event was stirring.

Peace Through Compassion.

We cannot achieve peace if we only act it; showing a front of non-violence and serenity. It is only possible to do so by doing so truly with the wholeness of one's own being. We cannot have peace simply by not fighting. We can only do so... if we start caring for one another as much as we care about ourselves.

If you haven't picked up on this yet... this can be applied to a plethora of things.

... In a sense, I wonder if the actions and things that I do are a front to satisfy a peer to gain acceptance, rather than doing so for their sake. This also relates. Figures.

I could go on (and I really can), but I'm sleepy.

Flag waving is ever so slightly tougher than I thought it would be. Mostly because I was afraid of hitting people. If they weren't there (or if I didn't care about hitting them) I'm sure I would've done fine.

I grow irritated at the fact that I get irritated when my parents ask me for help with their laptop. Despite knowing that they don't know about these things, I feel utter frustration when they ask for help on the most insignificant things. Things like "how do you empty the recycling bin", "where do I go to check my email again" and other things like that. Did you read the button that says 'empty recycling bin'? It's also been the umpteenth time I told you that you check your email using the internet. Gah.

Free time after flag waving led to: random contemplations on a random bench on a random hill followed by eating dinner at some random ramen place nearby. Fleh.

The Nonko film we watched from CIFF was not PG. How could that ever have been thought of as a PG movie, I cannot fathom.

Oh! It's 12:12. Someone has fallen for me. At least that's my brother's version of it. I've heard of ones where you can make a wish or something.

Urges. Gah. I hope it doesn't reach a point where I act upon them.

Futures

9/27/09
If you had the chance to change one fundamental thing in your past: a choice, your beliefs, an action, gene cross overs, anything, what would it be?

An excerpt before we begin (with minor adjustments for your viewing pleasure)...

So this is after I went on gmail and realized my friend didn't log off. So I sent him an email from his 'future self'. Sort of. I got lazy. I'm tired.

Jho says:
didn't you shut down your browser [Dood]? I left it on as don't remember me.

Dood says:
Lol.

Jho says:
I bet you left your browser on you hacker.

Dood says:
Lol.
I'm totally not in the mood to construct some sort of 'from the future' thing
Also, my writing caliber is inferior to yours, and seeing as how your writing can only improve... how would I
imitate the 20 years from the future Hong?

Jho says:
You're assuming we'd still be using email or typing or using English in 20 years haha

Dood says:
I wouldn't be assuming that.
However, future Hong knows that we wouldn't have whatever technology they have, and that you wouldn't
know the language they use in the future.
Fho is not an idiot

Jho says:
also another assumption.
a plethora of disease could overtake my brain and make me nothing but a vegetable

Dood says:
yeah, but as long as your brain functions, it's all good... in the future anyways. xD.
I was going to go with some epic tale about how you'll get back stabbed by that [enter expletive here] known as [Dood].
He was going to tell you about where it all began... in your one year exchange to Korea, where you eventually meet 2 members of Girls Generation
The destruction of your marriage, the loss of your job, your dethronement from your NGO, all can be traced back to the seeds sown when you helped bring [Dood] to Korea.
He was hoping he'd be able to send the warning to you before it was too late... before you started [Dood] off on everything.

Anyways...

How often do we hear the words "if only I didn't do ____" or "if only ____ never happened" or something along those lines? Are things so simple that nothing else shifts when something... anything.... is changed?

I think that rather impossible.

"if only I had studied for the test, I would've passed it". A null effect could be that even with studying, you fail. A negative effect could be you stayed up to study, woke up late due to fatigue, and missed the test entirely. A positive effect would be that you pass. These are of course, short term effects. Perhaps this was an important test that determined half your grade. This grade played an important role in that tenth digit of your GPA, the almighty factor in your future aspirations. Or it could just be nothing.

All actions have consequences. Not just in relation to Newton's 3rd Law.

If we change something in the past, how can you not expect the future to be affected, in more ways than one?

What if my parents decided not to immigrate to Canada? All my current connections would be nullified. I would not know any of you. Surely my grasp of English would be minuscule to my current standards as well as my Chinese being exponentially better than it is now. This blog would not exist. My personality, shaped by its environment, will be vastly different from what it would be now due to the cultural differences. The people I have met, my influence on them, will not have existed; they would be wholly different too. Everything changes. At least for anyone that I am, or would be, affiliated to in some way or another.

Going back to the excerpt, two possibilities exist: either Fho's message does not alter the course of history whatsoever or the altered course travels in such a way that Fho still exists in this timeline to send the message. Why? Because if the altered course creates a reality where Fho does not send the message, the message would not be received, and hence the reality remains unaltered.

Now consider the existence of parallel universes each being written at the exact same time as the other. If for every decision or choice made, a parallel universe is created for every other choice, then multiplied by every organism on this planet. Taking into consideration the possibility of the effects being minimal and others being critical, some universes can be incredibly similar whereas some are completely dissonant...

If you had the chance to change one fundamental thing in your past: a choice, your beliefs, an action, gene cross overs, anything, what would it be?

Would you be willing to risk changing everything just for this one shift? Can you be certain that changing this one fact will actually bring you to your intended destination?

..

By the way. The lay out and template has changed, if you haven't noticed. Honestly, if you haven't noticed, that'd be ridiculous. Thought I'd change it since I didn't want to use one of the generic blogger ones and go find something more... 'mathy'. Although I'm not sure how 'mathy' this is either.

Perspective

9/21/09
I had this better thought out Saturday morning. I'll see how much of it I can regurgitate on this early Monday (read 1:19 am) post.

Before we start....

I'm afraid I'm repetitious with what I write about. Sometimes while writing, or thinking about writing, it seems as if I've already wrote about it before. Have I? Haven't I? I don't even know. If I did, then these wouldn't be very random tangents now, would they?

...Onwards!

Perspective is an interesting thing. An object viewed from a multitude of angles gives off a myriad of images and ideas, that from but one, would remain entirely incomprehensible. In most cases, when viewed from only one, such misunderstandings and misgivings may occur that it is rather ridiculous and overblown.

This applies, of course, into the psychological realm as well. Events that happen, interactions with people, knowledge we gain, aspirations, desires, experiences.... all bear a multitude of possibilities.

Take for example the uninformed on an issue such as violence as a direct result of exposure to violent video games. Is it ever considered the environment that they grew up in? What about the people that they interact with? Their social circles? Why is it that video game violence can be questioned, but none of the blatant demonstrations of violence in media like on television or movies?

Another example. A male who's a generally nice guy showing an act of kindness to a female outcast. Whereas the male is just being himself, the female may misinterpret this as him showing interest in her.

Another example. Specific phrases or actions in one culture that are considered socially acceptable and the norm can be the complete opposite in the culture of another person. It could go from the loud slurping of noodles to the roles that we play in society.

..

I don't remember where I wanted to go with this. There must've been some sort of point I wanted to get across. Hm. Perhaps in due time.

Maybe it's just how I want to be a normal student and just learn like everyone else does, rather than receiving preferential treatment. Although I'm quite sure this isn't what it was.

In other news...

Watched 5 movies this weekend. I Love You, Man, Fantastic 4, Fantastic 4 2, The Mummy 3, and The Dark Knight (again). Rather a surprise because, as you all sort of know, I don't watch movies that often. ILY, Man was alright, nothing too special, regular psuedo romantic comedy type with the 'oh noes they broke up at near the end but get back together for the finale' bit. F4 and F4 2 were rather plain. For a super hero movie, you'd expect a bit more action than what was served. The Mummy 3 was pretty horrible. So horrible, that I fell asleep. The Dark Knight was awesome. So awesome.

Studied at the library for once. Wasn't exactly by choice, but it was peaceful in there (unsurprisingly I might add). Rather cold inside the place.

From msn to phone to texting. We haven't really improved eh?

Joined another intramural team this year: Ultimate. Insanely fun game requiring a lot of team work and stamina to get through. Stamina I lack, teamwork is not too bad. Managed to do some epic dives and got two points. I'd love to take the credit for those points... but obviously it's a team thing and I was just lucky enough to be there to dive for the Frisbee. Speaking of diving, managed to lightly bruise my elbow-ish area, get my glasses knocked off, and tick off some guy that said I didn't know what personal space was. Bah. I know personal space, I just choose to invade it.

I'd hate to have seen how I played if I haven't been jogging. Would've gone down a lot faster than I did. Two of the plays (is that the correct term?) that I participated in were way too drawn out, the stiffening of legs was a painful reminder of how out of shape I still am.

The acceleration pedal is not the brake pedal. Sorry dad, didn't mean to scare you.

Well. 2 am approaches. Each passing second means one less second of sleep. Better go before I get in trouble. More jogging tomorrow!

Let's Talk About Jogging

9/17/09
I've been having urges to blag. However, I have yet to compose something worthy of posting. Of course, given my track record of what I post, anything is worthy.

...

*ponder*

...

Let's talk about jogging.

Returning to Rtchannel this Fall.... Jogging! After a long summer hiatus, the athletic hit "Jogging" is back and better than before! All new features including a revamped routine for hopefully more 'super effective' training! An emptier track for better focus on the excitement of jogging!

What surprises await our protagonist as he jogs his way through this semester? A healthier lifestyle? A stronger body? Failure? Defeat? Out-of-breath-ness? Improvement? Detraction? Love?

Join us Monday, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 8am to experience the revolutionary comeback of "Jogging"!

...

Yeah. I'm not really sure why I'm getting up so early to jog. Especially since I can get a whole 3 more hours of sleep if I didn't. Rather ridiculous, no?

In other news...

Organic Chemistry lab equipment is highly capable of fear inducement. If I manage to break every piece of equipment in that drawer, I'd accumulate enough charges to pay for my car insurance. Have I talked about my car insurance? That's a hefty $1300. Dang.

The whole TS / KW VMA thing was re-enacted today during the OL Appreciation Dinner. Kudos to that guy that went up and shot Mason down. Rather epic. On the unepic end of the spectrum is the fact that everyone dressed up to eat pizza. The only way to make it seem even slightly formal was to consume it using cutlery.

Recently realized that I missed out a whole Eason album alongside a few songs from another album. I know of course that it'd be hard for me to have every one of his songs (unsurprisingly, I don't like some of them), but it was a big shocker since I really like the songs on that album. Biggest fail was having to sift through Mr. Orange-kun yet again to empty enough space for these songs. I hate sifting. I like to listen to my songs. Sifting is removing songs that I like for other songs that I also like. Sadness.

4 out of 5 classes have been delegated to taking notes on paper rather than laptop, since it's how the notes given work out. I never realized how light my backpack was without my laptop. It was certainly a refreshing feeling to be sure. At the expense of trees though. Sorry.

Watching a drama called Akihabara@DEEP over the weekend. Basically about a bunch of otaku in Akihabara banding together to form a troubleshooting company that helps out with whatever problems the city has. Funny in it's ridiculous situations and geeky ways. The best episodes were 7 and 11 since 7 had zombies and 11 had an ultra awesome epic final fight scene. It certainly does give another glimpse (media-controlled of course) of otaku way of life. Obviously it's mostly lies and falsehoods since it is media generated to be entertaining.

Apparently, other than MLiA, MLiG, and FML, there's also a GMH site. Along the same lines of user submitted stories, except this time more about random acts of kindness. Like mini bowls of Chicken Noodle Soup. I'm now wondering what other sites such as these are out there.

Hm. 1 am. Better sleep or I'd get in trouble. Ieh?

9/11/09

Masks

9/11/09
We all wear them. At least most of us do. At least that's what I believe.

Acting differently depending on your peers; seeking to gain acceptance and approval by being a certain way.

Why?

Because we're afraid of being ignored; hated by our peers; isolated by ourselves; alone.

Why masks and not layers? Layers would imply that each surface is a covering iteration for the previous one; one beneath another; one protecting those before it and hiding beneath the one after it. Masks imply interchangeability; a lack of connection between these sets with only the core bearing these masks the same.

To what extent do I wear masks? How many do I have? Who sees which ones?

A mask for my parents; a mask for my brother.

A mask for my friends; a mask for my acquaintances.

A mask for strangers; a mask for males; a mask for females.

A mask for you.

What would happen if I switched around all these masks? Would I still be accepted? Would people think me crazy and absurd? Would you still accept me?

Perhaps... there's even a mask for myself.

Do I even know who I am? Beneath all of these interchangeable masks, is there a definite face? So much confusion about what I want, who I want to be, what I should do, buried beneath these facets of something perhaps non-existential.

Escaping reality; wearing masks. Even I don't want to face my true self... because deep down, I'm afraid that there is nothing at all behind the masks; just emptiness.

Hot Girl Density Theory

9/8/09
Well, I technically can't call it a theory since I have not actual evidence. Perhaps hypothesis would be better?

Anyways.

The Hot Girl Density Theory is a theory that me and my brother developed back while we were in Hong Kong, which was further reinforced when I was in Taiwan. Basically, the theory is that it's not that HK and Taiwan have more hot girls than Canada does, but rather the same ratio of hot girls. It only seems that there are more in HK and Taiwan than Canada, but rather, because of a high population density, one's chance of bumping into one is exponentially greater, giving one the illusion that there are more hot girls than there really is.

Well, I also find Asian girls more attractive, but that really is not the point.

Best epiphany of the day: I actually don't have 8 am mornings each day; that's next semester.
However...
Worst epiphany of the day: If I play squash in-between Nans and my labs, I basically have no time for food since I have double labs (as in 6 consecutive hours of non-stop joy). I'm quite sure we all know how much I adore eating.

I think the worst epiphany won out by far, since I don't mind waking early. I do mind not eating though. I mind that quite a bit.

First class of NANS was pretty interesting. D. Cramb is a really chill guy. He also said interwebs. That is awesome. Not so sure about my group members, I'll see how things go, one of them seems too intent on doing things right when we should be focused on the doing. Speaking of Nans, the guy girl ratio is reminiscent of the horror stories of Engg. Rather ridiculous.

Squash was fun, except I pulled my arm after swinging a few times. I really need to watch my strength (or lack thereof). Looking forward to more.

Ever have that feeling where there's an immeasurable weight on your eyelids and there's some sort of static blocking out the back of your mind? It's rather distracting.

So there's the whole fml thing, then AnAn sis told me about the MLiA thing, and today I found MLiG. I personally like MLiA more because it's more 'slice of life' ish and very Yotsuba-esque. Fml on the whole is rather depressing (if not humorous at the extent of others), and MLiG is too overwhelmingly heartwarming.

Loft lifestyle is back with the whole eating lunch then playing games and getting angry when failing bit.

New at the top of the list of things I lose all too often: foamtip earbuds. I don't understand why they keep falling off but they do. It's ticking me off to no end. No end. Other stuff on this list would include chap sticks and a long time ago... winter gloves.

Sudden uprising in Korean music. It's all Jho's fault.

Built a glucose molecule with my new modeling kit today. So much giddiness and fun. Too bad it was so darn expensive.

Oweek Official Over o_o

9/6/09
That's 4 O's ladies and gentlemen. Alliteration ftw. (Well, pseudo-five)

Random Oweek occurrences starting.... now!

For the duration of the week, my group number continued to dwindle and soon our group became assimilated with group 605. Not that this would've posed any problems since it means we're able to keep the students entertained for longer.

The Sexxxy play was pretty awesome, if not absurd, and would be a motivation for me to be an Orientation Leader next year (although in reality, I could just go watch it and forgo the whole 'Orientation' business).

Played dodgeball for the first time in at least 3 years. So unbelievably fun and nostalgic. It is readily apparent how much my body has changed and how unaccustomed I am to whipping balls out because I accidentally over-extended my arm when throwing. Oops. Also played a small bit of Ultimate. Finally played an epic game of Barbarians, except it was OL's against students, but still with the flags on all 4 corners. I managed to reopen my scab yet again afterwards. Oops.

Biggest fail: losing track of time because I was too busy assisting Jho with putting 35 t-shirts on. Second biggest fail? Not joining him xD.

Pancake breakfast line was too long and we gave up before we even tried. Alumni's BBQ line moved along way faster; not that it mattered since we kind of went to the front where other OL's were. Heh.

Finally got a chance to try out my new racquet the other day. It was epic fail at first because of how light the racquet was, so I was unable to give the ball any distance whatsoever. Got completely destroyed until the later matches where either I got better or he was running out of stamina. Embarrassingly, we played on one of the courts where people walking by could watch us play. Mocking of a friend's mom occurred here; at her expense of course.

The optional day trip was exceptionally amazing. While people went to look at animals napping or going shopping (honestly don't know why they would choose to go to Market), we were off on an adventure at the Glenbow. We spent at least 20 minutes gawking at the epic Lego display out front (we later gawked at it another 3 times btw). Headed upstairs, and then spent the next 1.5 hours playing a guess-the-mystery-character game and coloring. Yes. Coloring. Ah, to be a kid again. Headed out for some Pho and BBT while sitting beside the Bow prank-texting Heather. Headed back to the Glenbow and spent more than an hour playing with Lego. It was epic fun. Explored the place then got kicked out. Much more epic than whatever those other people did. Maybe. Also, there were these two kids that joined us playing Lego. They were so cute that it should be illegal. Such sharing and caring. Fuzzy happiness when the kid was all "Can I join you guys? I love playing with Lego!". Awww.

I don't know how long I spent making this whatever thing. I think I'll call it "Unending Smiley Faces", but then someone brought up the fact that I might be a bit OCD since I just kept going at this without ever stopping or having the thoughts of stopping. There might be some merit to the whole OCD thing, I have a plethora of evidence to support it. Even if it's only a minor bit.

Someone also described me as 'timid' during one of the icebreaker games. Some could attest to this while others may wholeheartedly disagree. Just goes to show what kind of masks I wear in front of different people.

In other news...

Went to the World Skills 2009 thing yesterday. Everything there was just so impressive and amazing. How people manage to do such things escapes me. Of particular enjoyment was looking at Pastry-making / Confectioneries, Cooking, Hairstyles, Floristry, Bricklaying, and Landscape Gardening (wait, that's actually quite a bit). With the two ones relating to food, I don't understand how they can make the food look so awesome and delicious. There were super crazy hairstyles. Floristry was equally amazing as they were able to design and set up flora in unique and mesmerizing pieces. Bricklaying was pretty hardcore. Landscape Gardening was cool in that all teams had to have a specific layout for different pieces on their garden but are able to deviate from them; somehow one of them stuck out and gave me a very soothing and calming feeling, I don't know why.

Classes start in two days. I'm both excited and nervous for the upcoming semesters as they will be littered with multiple labs full of craziness. Tuesdays and Thursdays will be especially killer with their double back-to-back lab combo.

Awkwardness abound as I'm trying to figure out how I'm supposed to interact; because random flailing of arms and texting is really not the way I'd like things to go... I'm really just not sure what to do.

I hope the frequency of posts don't dwindle as the semester comes (it already has in a way), but I'm afraid it might happen as posting takes way longer than I'd want it to.

Got a new cellphone finally! Sony Ericsson w760 red! The old one's camera was a serious deterrent to one of my favorite random things to do on a regular basis: taking photos. It'll take a bit to get used to the layout and button functions and such, but since it's still a Sony Ericsson, it shouldn't be too bad. Of particular annoyance was that none of the birthdays transferred over, so I had to dig them out again from elsewhere. I feel slightly guilty of something because I got a new phone before my brother did, and he's had his phone longer... not that my parents are buying me the phone... but it just feels like it. Biggest dilemma now is: what should I do with all the texts on the w810? Leave them there; delete them all; write them down somewhere? Sigh.

On the topic of birthdays, I decided to remove mine's from Facebook. Why? Because it is ridiculous to receive birthday greetings from people that don't care / know me / only know my birthday because of a tiny reminder on their Facebook page telling them about it. It feels sort of empty and hollow to receive them; no offense.

Played a board game called Zombies!!! Survival horror dice rolling mayhem occurred. Much backstabbing was involved. I won both games alongside Miraei for one and alongside Short and Miraei for the other. If a zombie apocalypse does arrive one day, I wonder how well I'd fare. Probably not very well.

I'm still wondering what Hold music is btw.
